The Belugas are a not-so competitive beach volleyball team, maybe in a recreational neighborhood league. I chose a beluga whale not only because it was a unique sports mascot, but it would show the fun nature of the team, rather than choosing a vicious predatory animal.

Not included in my research: 

I ultimately chose Chicago to be the location after someone pointed out an obvious solution. It would also fix any issues of having an arctic animal for a summer sport; Chicago is basically the arctic when comparing it to these other California beaches.
